Eastern Hokkaido has many lakes nestled by deep and primeval forests. Some lakes sit secludedly as if they’d been forgotten they exist, and some are crater lakes showing the magnificent figure. Eastern Hokkaido reminds you of the diversity in nature. Classic activities are guided nature trekking into pristine forests and canoeing in the calm lakes. A new type of activity is a hot-air balloon ride to see the grandeur of forests and lakes.

Canoeing

Canoeing is one of the most popular activities in the lakes of eastern Hokkaido such as Lake Akan surrounded by deep forests, Lake Kussharo which is the biggest crater lake in Japan, and Lake Shikaribetsu which is located at the highest altitude in Hokkaido. Lake canoeing is recommended for the beginners because there’s no flow and the water surface is calm. The remarkable feature of canoeing is to view Mother Nature at the height of water level. The lake reflects the images of each season such as greens during summer, colorful autumn leaves during fall. Diving driving suits allow you to enjoy canoeing even during the winter season.

Fishing

A wide range of freshwater fish habitat in the lakes of eastern Hokkaido, like Japanese char, Japanese huchen, trout, and rainbow trout. A number of tourists visit the lakes here for fishing; Lake Akan, Lake Kussharo, and Lake Toro are especially well known. Those who would like to concentrate on fishing should join one of the tours with a guide who knows the lake very well. In winter when the lake surface is frozen, ice-fishing tours will be available. The tours provide you with all the tools you need and let you cook Tempura (fried smelt) on the lake.

MTB

Fat Bike has recently become popular among cyclists. Equipped with tires which are almost twice as wide as those of MTB, Fat Bike gives you a stable ride even on bumpy roads, sand, and snow; therefore, the number of fans in Hokkaido has been increasing including women and children. Special courses for fat bikes are made in winter, and new tours to see drift ice while cycling on the snow are provided as the project to attract more tourists using fat bikes. Let’s give it a try to this unique activity, fat-bike riding, to travel through eastern Hokkaido in winter!

Dog Sledding

Dashing through the snow field by dog sledding sounds a dreamy activity; it can be experienced in eastern Hokkaido. The dogs leading the sled are Alaskan Husky mated with a hunting dog called “Pointer” and Husky so that they would run long distance faster without getting tired. There’re two types of tours available that you can either hold the reins or be the guest on the sleigh. Starting out by communicating with the dogs, you can take a brief lecture on how to control it.

Hot-Air Balloon

Aerial walking tours on a hot-air balloon, which anyone longs once, are available in many places in Hokkaido such as Furano and Niseko. The ride in Tokachi is especially popular because you can look down on a patchwork-like field in summer and a boundless snow field in winter. They offer several types of tours: a mooring flight which fly up to a certain height with rope connected to the ground, a free flight whose flight route is planned depending on the weather of the day, and a flight which kids and pets are allowed. This is a perfect activity for those who want to feel the size and dynamics of eastern Hokkaido over the sky.
