Eastern Hokkaido has a lot of rivers which flow from the inland mountains to the Sea of Okhotsk and Pacific Ocean. Most of the are habitats of freshwater fish such as Japanese char, masu trout, Salvelinus malma, and Japanese huchen thanks to the abundant water. There’re also many marshlands located mainly on the coastal side of Pacific Ocean including the biggest marshland in Japan, Kushiro Marsh. These rivers and marshlands are great venues for fishing, canoeing, and other outdoor activities.

Let’s take a tour guided by an expert of the nature if you wish to fully enjoy Mother Nature in eastern Hokkaido. Trekking tours in Kushiro Marsh are highly rated since you can observe the wildlife and explore the area which is usually hard to enter. Canoeing

Canoeing gives you the opportunity to observe the nature and wildlife from a different angle. Since many of the rivers in eastern Hokkaido flow gently, this activity is open to kids and beginners. Kushiro Marsh is the most popular place for canoeing, and there’re lots of guided canoeing tours with lectures on the nature. If you’re lucky, you might be able to encounter red-crowned cranes, Ezo deer, red fox, and Japan’s largest freshwater fish, Japanese huchen, whose size if over 100 cm (3’2 feet.)

Fishing

It’s nice to go stream fishing in eastern Hokkaido from spring to autumn. You can catch a variety of freshwater fish such as Japanese char which is also called “Ezo Iwana”, masu trout which spends its lifetime in the river, rainbow trout which is found all over Japan, and Japanese huchen which is Japan’s biggest freshwater fish. The guides, who know the rivers in eastern Hokkaido inside out, will take you to the spot where fish gather around. They provide a rental service of all the tools needed including rods, reels, lures, bait, so all you have to do is to bring yourself. There’s also a package plan that comes with a canoeing tour as a set.
