Yonemachi Furusato Hall
The settlement of Kushiro City began here in Yone-machi. With rich natural resources including fish, forest and coal found nearby, this area became the center of Eastern Hokkaido's economy from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Today, the hilltop Yone-machi Park is a popular sightseeing spot for its panoramic views. Across the way from the park is the "Furusato-Kan," a local history museum. Originally built in 1900, known as Kushiro's oldest wooden house, the building has been preserved and opened to the public. The interpretive materials provide a wealth of information about the booming economy and ways of life of merchants in Kushiro's old days.
