Shibetsu Salmon Museum
The town of Shibetsu, located at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula, is renowned as the "Town of Salmon." This small town boasts some of the largest salmon catches of the nation. And here visitors will find the "Salmon Aquarium," which exhibits Japan's largest collection of Salmonidae-family fish. Learn all about these magnificent fish from their natural ecology to culinary history and culture. Behind the facility, an observation bridge over the Shibetsu River offers views of the species such as chum salmon and pink salmon as they swim upstream. The observation deck is also well worth a visit, offering magnificent views of the scenery. The observation bridge is open to the public from mid-August to mid-November.
