Obihiro Zoo is notable for pioneering Japan's first "cold climate endurance training" program, which allows southern animal species to withstand extreme cold. In the second year of the zoo's operation, a lion cub kept indoors over winter without natural sunlight developed vitamin D deficiency. In response, the zoo decided to let animals outdoors during the day for sunlight. Although at first terrified by the winter environment, it was not long before the lion cub was playing and tumbling in the snow. Since then the "cold climate endurance training" program has become an important part of Japan's zookeeping history.
