Obihiro Zoo is notable for pioneering Japan's first "cold climate endurance training" program, which allows South Africa animals to withstand extreme cold. In the second year of the zoo's operation, a lion cub kept indoors over winter without natural sunlight developed vitamin D deficiency. A zookeeper decided to let animals outdoors during the day for sunlight. Although at first terrified by the winter environment, the lion cub soon started playing and having fun in the snow. Since then the "cold climate endurance training" program has become an important part of Japan's zookeeping history.
