Canoe down the river, through extraordinary winter scenery!
Even during winter, it is possible to canoe through the Kushiro Wetlands down the Kushiro River. Although most rivers freeze in subzero temperatures, the Kushiro River continues to flow. Therefore, you can canoe by gently gliding down the river through serene landscapes.
On cold winter mornings, frozen trees with steam rising from the river surface create a magical scene. “Diamond dust,” a natural phenomenon, can be seen on clear days when the temperature reaches below minus 10ºC.
A guided canoe trip, which takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, travels through the breathtaking winter scenery that can only be seen from a canoe. As you make your way down the river, you may be lucky enough to encounter Steller’s sea eagles, Yezo sika deer and other wildlife. Drysuits are provided for the trip, so you don’t have to worry about getting wet or cold.
For families or groups visiting the Obihiro area, we recommend the “Winter Tokachigawa Nature Tour,” where you can ride a rafting boat down the Tokachi River.
Also, there is the “Eagle-viewing Cruise,” where a bird expert will share his knowledge while you search for wild birds from the boat.
