Whale Watching Cruise
Take a cruise out to the big blue sea, and get a glimpse of these beautiful, friendly giants.
The waters off the coast of Rausu on the Shiretoko Peninsula are well-known for its variety of whales and dolphins. From late July to September, you can catch sperm whales flipping their tails as they dive deep into the blue sea. Also, you can find Dall's porpoises, orcas, known as one of the fiercest predators of the ocean, and flocks of shearwaters and petrels. If you are lucky, you may even get an up-close view as they swim alongside the boat.
Cruises on the Utoro side of the Shiretoko Peninsula head towards the strictly-managed and protected area of the national park, Cape Shiretoko. Enjoy the views of unusual rocky cliffs, numerous waterfalls, or magnificent landscapes from the luxury of a boat, which are otherwise inaccessible. The chances of spotting Yezo brown bears, white-tailed sea eagles, Yezo sika deer, whales, and porpoises while on the cruise are high.
Abashiri also offers whale-watching cruises for those looking to catch a glimpse of whales, porpoises, and aquatic fowl.
