Haul in the “big one” out at sea!
Eastern Hokkaido faces both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. Here, you can find one of the leading fishing grounds in Japan, making it a popular destination for sea angling.
While smaller fish, such as the righteye flounder, saffron cod, and halibut can be caught fishing from shore, for big game, you need to head out to the open sea. Anglers can go for glory, by hauling in the big fish, like the Atka mackerel, rockfish, and cod. For those who want to enjoy real sea fishing, we suggest taking one of the chartered fishing boats (reservation required). Fishing cruises leave from ports in Rausu and Utoro in Shiretoko, Abashiri Port, and Kushiro East Port. Though regulations prohibit non-licensed fishing of chum salmon, there are some boats out of Utoro Port, which carry the required license. Interested anglers can fish for chum salmon on these licensed boats between September 1 and 25.
For beginners and tourists, we recommend the Garinko Fishing Cruise. Operating between June and September, this cruise provides everything you need to fish, from rods to bait. Come and enjoy fishing for righteye flounder on the Sea of Okhotsk!
