In Shiretoko, a Natural World Heritage Site, there are many guided nature tours. The Shiretoko One-day Guided Tour takes you through scenic locations in the mountains to the Shiretoko Five Lakes, where you can experience the lakes and beaches in Shiretoko that are off the main roads. Shiretoko Five Lakes Guided Walk is a half-day hike to the boardwalk. Some of the other tours include the Furepe Falls Guided Walk, the Trek Around Lake Rausu, and the Nocturnal Wildlife Tour. With so numerous tours on offer, you can experience the rich nature in Shiretoko in many ways.
Deep inside the temperate deciduous forests along Akan’s lakeside, “bokke,” or “mud volcanoes,” spew acrid sulfur and mud. The Onneto Old-growth Forest Trek, at the Akan Nature Center, takes hikers through rare, old-growth Sakhalin spruce forests, and around the blue Onneto Lake.
