Kamuikotan is an Ainu word, kamui meaning God and kotan meaning village.
This place has been a sacred place of the Ainu people since ancient times.
The sudden narrowing of Ishikari river causes strong currents. This often causes boats to capsize, it is hearsay that the Ainu people fear such things as believing that it is the handiwork of the evil spirits living in the canyons.
