Gyoko no Oka / Abashiri Phlox Park
This scenic hillside overlooks Lake Abashiri. During Eastern Hokkaido's short summer, around 150,000 moss phlox plants vibrantly blossom across vast fields spanning about 10 hectares -- twice the area of Tokyo Dome. With the breathtaking scenery in the distance and magnificent fields of flowers up close, it is truly the best of both worlds. This beautiful park was created by a group of volunteer retirees, averaging in 67 years in age, who spent about eight years in building it. “Gyoko no Oka” means “Fortune Hill”, and you will surely feel fortunate to be standing here.
