Robatayaki, a style of grilling from the city of Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido.

Enjoy robatayaki grilled dining in Kushiro, the harbour town of delicious seafood. Here, you can fully enjoy the taste of the sea.

At Fisherman’s Wharf MOO of Kushiro, from spring to autumn, there is a special kind of robatayaki event, called “”Ganpeki Robata””.

The name “Fisherman’s Wharf MOO” refers to the sightseeing complex of two areas: the Kushiro Waterfront, and the Nusamai Bridge, from where you can see beautiful views of the sunset.

The site is often visited by sightseeing travellers while strolling around the streets of Kushiro or shopping, but from May to October, you may see many restaurant tents set up along the wharf. This is “Ganpeki Robata”.

Ganpeki Robata works on a food ticket system. A full ticket subdivided into various denominations can be purchased for ¥1000. From there you can purchase food from the various shops and pay by detaching the stubs from the ticket. Tickets cannot be refunded, but you can purchase stubs in ¥50 increments if you cannot cover the cost of an item with your current ticket.

There’s lots of food to choose from. From standard dishes like hokke fish, there is also grilled salmon, scallops, oysters, and even seasonal shishamo fish. Or, if you are a visitor to Hokkaido, you may want to try some asparagus, or even succulent meat dishes like pork skewers, offals, or “Ghengis Khan” style grilled mutton.

The ticket system allows patrons to eat what they want and how much they want, while light eaters can still enjoy themselves for around only ¥1000.

Come and enjoy the seafood of Kushiro with robatayaki-style grilling while taking in the beautiful view of the sunset along the wharf.
