Route 238, called the Okhotsk Route, hosts a number of restaurants that offer hotate, or Japanese scallop. One recommended restaurant is “”Rest House Tokoro””. In the morning, you can enjoy the taste of hotate freshly caught from the waters of Lake Saroma.

The must-try meal is the “Hotate-tsukushi Teishoku”. As the (Japanese) name suggests, it is a set meal packed with 7 hotate dishes all on the tray.

In addition to sashimi and deep-fried fish, you can enjoy your hotate alongside both salted and sweetened boiled fish, kimchi, and shellfish miso soup, all at once.
Strengthened by swimming in the waters of Lake Saroma, you can feel the firm, chewy texture of the scallops. Upon biting down on one, you instantly can’t help but be completely taken over.
“In addition to these, rice dishes such as hotate-don and noodle dishes with hotate are available, so it is very easy to get lost in the sea of choices.

Also, in winter it is oyster season. Lake Saroma is an obvious breeding place for oysters! Between January and March, the restaurant offers rich, succulent oyster set-meals.

As well, the place is famed for sushi! While it is definitely a regular restaurant, there is also an air of a sushi restaurant, and I recommend that you try out the sushi as you like.

And one more dish that you have to try is this: “Okhotsk-Kitami shio-yakisoba”, a popular fried-noodle dish from Kitami City. Prepared using scallops and onions grown in Kitami and sprinkled with “magic water”, or essentially, scallop essence, it is a dish full of richness that I recommend.

The sunset view of Lake Saroma from the Restaurant is also very beautiful.
